Abstract

921,437. Seals and sealing. W. R. GRACE & CO. Aug. 5, 1960 [Aug. 18, 1959], No. 27316/60. Class 146 (2). An adjustable sealing device for putting a seal 52 around the twisted necks 54 of flexible bags comprises a pair of jaws 14, a plunger 24 having opposed cams 22, a floating punch 28 slidable on the plunger 24 and spring-urged to clip the seal, and means to vary the pivotal motion of the sealing jaws so that various sizes of seals, Fig. 4, may be slid into position. The seals are supplied from stepped guideway 70 which allows the different size seals to rest and according to the one chosen, the device is adjusted by the position of the plunger 24. This is determined by a four-position cam 40 the sides 42, 44, 46, 48 being different distances from the axis 50. The first action of sealing pressure folds the upper arms 64 together and when the jaw follower rollers 20 reach the flat part 23 of the plunger 24 no further pivoting of the jaws 14 occurs but the plunger continues to squash the seal into the shape shown in Fig. 8. The punch 28 may form marks on the seal. The seals are claimed in Divided Specification 921,438.
