In a liquid spray apparatus for use in making paper and comprising a spray nozzle or nozzles 3 connected to a head or heads 1, 5 interconnected by a liquid supply pipe 6 and slidably mounted in a tube 7 having a slot 4 through which the spray nozzles 3 project, the spray head or heads 1, 5 are driven in one direction or the other along the tube 7 by a helical drive member 33. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the helical drive member 33 is secured to a member 32 attached to a shaft 28 mounted in bearings 21 and driven by an electric motor 13 through a gear-box 14 and bevel gears 16, 17. The end of the shaft 28 remote from the drive member 33 is threaded and engages a follower 23 which is slidingly mounted on a fixed bar 24 and is provided with an adjustable limit stop 25 in order to actuate switches 26 in its extreme positions to effect reversal of the motor 13. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the helical drive member 33 is rotated by a reversible pneumatic motor. In yet a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spray head 1 is connected by a bar to a non-rotatable externally threaded member which is engaged in a threaded sleeve driven by a reversible motor. In a still further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the spray head may be connected, in addition to or in lieu of the supply pipe 6, to a supply tube passing through a slot in the tube 7 opposite to the nozzle 3.
