Abstract
A finished motor gasoline composition, at least 45% by volume of which distils over at 100 DEG C., consists essentially of (a) a base gasoline comprising 20-100% by volume of at least one gasoline component other than straight-run gasoline (e.g. steam or catalytically cracked gasoline, catalytic reformate and alkylate), and (b) a small proportion of one or more quaternary ammonium halides of the general formula: <FORM:0920288/III/1> where R1 has 6-24 carbon atoms, R2 has 1-24 carbon atoms, R3 and R4 have 1-3 carbon atoms, all R's being aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, and X is a halogen atom. R3 and R4 are preferably methyl groups, while R1 and R2 groups specified are methyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, octadecenyl and octadecadienyl. The quaternary ammonium halide may be dissolved in isopropyl alcohol before addition to the gasoline. A small proportion of a detergent, e.g. a monoester of one or more fatty acids and one or more polyhydric alcohols, and also sorbitan mono-oleate may also be present. In comparitive examples, hexylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, sorbitan mono-oleate, a mixture of mono-N-alkyl-substituted 1:3-propylene diamines, wherein the alkyl groups are derived from coconut oil fatty acids, and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-oleylimidazoline-2 are added to a base gasoline either alone or with a quaternary halide as defined under (b). Some of the base gasolines contained tetra-ethyl lead.
