Abstract

Jet fuels are stabilized by one or more of the compounds <FORM:1001157/C4-C5/1> in which R is an aliphatic group having 4 to 24 carbon atoms, and X is -NHR, -OH.RNH2, or -OH. The fuel may be kerosene or a mixture of kerosene and gasoline, and may also contain unsaturated hydrocarbons and/or sulphur and nitrogen compounds. The stabilizer may be added as such or in a solvent, e.g. alcohols, Stoddart solvent, or kerosene. Other additives may be present, e.g. dyes, dispersants, metal deactivators, antioxidants, anticorrosion agents, and antiknock agents, but these are not exemplified.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formulae:-<FORM:1001157/C2/1> in which R is an aliphatic group having 4 to 24 carbon atoms, and X is -NHR, -OH.RNH2, or -OH. The compounds are prepared by heating a mixture of a primary amine, RNH2, and ethylenediamine tetracetic acid in a molar ratio of at least 2: 1, at a temperature of at least 200 DEG C. for at least 3 hours with removal of water of condensation. The compounds may be separated since a mixture of all three compounds is obtained. The reaction may be carried out in an organic solvent having a boiling point at the reaction temperature and which forms an azeotrope with water. The heating is preferably continued so as to form a product containing an average of not more than 0.8 carboxylic or carboxylic-amine salt groups per molecule of product.
