Abstract
A method of converting pig iron into steel comprises insufflating a suspension of powdered basic reagents in commercially pure oxygen into the bath below the level of the molten metal, the oxygen being at a pressure of at least 20 kgs. per sq. cm. The suspension may be blown in from the bottom or side of the converter through copper tuyeres and may comprise oxides or carbonates of the alkali or alkaline earth metals. Up to 25% by volume of CO2 may be included in the blast for temperature control and at least a part of the powder may be injected in an auxiliary gas, e.g. CO2. U.S.A.
