Abstract
21-Acyloxy-20-keto steroids are prepared by 21-acyloxylation of the 21-unsubstituted keto steroid using a lead tetraacylate in the presence of boron trifluoride and in a solvent medium comprising a mixture of a hydrocarbon solvent and an alcohol. Preferably the reaction is effected at room temperature with lead tetraacetate and boron trifluoride etherate in a benzene-methanol mixture. The process is suitable for the acyloxylation of pregnane-20-ones of the 5a - and 5b -series containing, if desired, a keto, acyloxy or hydroxy group at C3, a keto group at C11, a keto group at C12 and/or a methyl group at C16, and which may be unsaturated at one or more of the following positions 1(2), 4(5), 5(6), 9(11) and 16(17). The invention is illustrated by 8 detailed examples.
