Abstract

919,753. Circuit arrangements for discharge lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. June 20, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 22266/61. Class 38 (4). The supply circuit for a fluorescent lamp 12 comprises a high-frequency square-wave source 14 connected to a transformer 20 and to a ballast 34, the transformer having a secondary winding 26 providing a starting voltage for the lamp 12 and windings 28, 30 energizing its heating filaments 16, 18. Passage of running current to the lamp through the transformer 20 is prevented by a capacitor 32 which impedes all but the higher harmonic current components, and these in turn are impeded by the ballast 34 to prevent the high starting voltage from reaching the source 14, the ballast 34 thus delivering running current to the lamp less square than the source 14. Capacitance means for power factor correction may be connected across terminals 36, 38.
