Abstract
919,379. Making electric lamp filaments. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 29, 1961 [Dec. 8, 1960], No. 42299/60. Class 39 (2). A tungsten filament in the form of a helical coil, before incorporation in an electric incandescent lamp is threaded on a straight and substantially horizontal rod or wire of molybdenum or tungsten in an inert or reducing atmosphere and is heated by the passage of current along the rod to a temperature and for a time sufficient to cause recrystallization of the tungsten in the filament. A tungsten rod 2 is butt-welded to a molybdenum rod 3, one end of which is secured in a tube extending from a brass block 5 and provided with a gas inlet 7. The other end of the rod passes through a hole in a perforated plate 9 and is clamped to a terminal block 10 urged away from the plate 9 by a spring. The mandrel is surrounded by a silica sleeve 4, a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen passed into the tube and the mandrel heated to 2000 degrees for an hour by the passage of an electric current. The mandrel is then cooled and the filament 1 threaded thereon. With a flow of gas as before, the filament is heated by the passage of current to 1950 degrees for 1ยข to 2 hours. To avoid overheating the ends of the filament, the sleeve 4 may be enlarged in the neighbourhood of the filament so that the velocity of the gas is greater adjacent the bare parts of the mandrel. Filaments so treated are stated to be specially suitable for use with a vitreous silica envelope.
