Abstract
Unsaturated ketones of the general formula R1-C(R2)=CHCH2CH2CO.R3 wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl groups and R3 is an alkyl group are prepared by contacting an allyl acetoacetate of the general formula R1R2C(CH=CH2).OCOCH2COR3 with an aluminium tri-phenoxide at an elevated temperature e.g. 100 DEG -300 DEG C. In an example, 3-methyl-but-1-enyl-3-acetoacetate is heated with aluminium tri-(methyl salicylate) or 140-170 DEG C., CO2 being evolved and 2-methyl hept-2-en-6-one is formed as residue; a lower yield is obtained in absence of the aluminium phenoxide catalyst.
