Abstract
918,976. Pyrotechnic devices. WAECO Ltd. May 11, 1959 [May 9, 1958; Nov. 3, 1958], Nos. 14973/58 and 35271/58. Class 9 (2). Relates to marine pyrotechnic devices containing a smoke-generating composition ignited when water enters the device and activates a battery. The composition 30 is housed in a cylindrical container 10 around a copper flash tube 17 extending through a base closure 15 and secured therein by a flanged sleeve 18. A delay fuze 25 extends from the top of the flash passage to a perforated disc 26 covering the composition and above this is an extension 11 of reduced diameter provided with transverse closure partitions 22, 23, 24, each having an aperture closed by rupturable waterproof seals 29. The apertures 22, 24 are diametrically opposed to the aperture 23. An ignition unit 32, which is stored separately and screwed on to the base of the device before use, comprises an electric igniter 36 which projects into the tube 17 and an electric cell 39 activated when water enters through ports 40. An air vent 42 is provided near the top of the unit 32, which contains a ballast weight in the form of a lead ring 44. Tabs 47 secure an annular buoyancy chamber 46 to the container. Before use, caps 51 protect the two ends of the device. A bracket 49 having resilient arms 50 may be used to support the device on a ship prior to launching. A lifebuoy may be attached to the device by a line, so that when the buoy is thrown the device is jerked out of the bracket. Springs 53 then push off the caps 51 and water enters the unit 32, so producing a firing current through the igniter 36. The flash arising from the igniter passes along the tube and ignites the fuze 25 which starts combustion of the charge 30. The resulting gases rupture the seals 29 and the smoke generated follows a sinuous passage through the extension 11 before escaping. The composition 30 may comprise potassium chlorate, lactose, sucrose, kaolin and an orange oil dye. An electric light bulb may be placed at the top of the container.
