A hand held dry-powder extinguisher has a pivoted handle 31 which locks a valve release lever 28 when the handle is in its down position as shown. On lifting the extinguisher by the handle 31, the lever 28 is released and may be used to force down a cutter 34 to rupture a diaphragm 9. After the diaphragm 9 is ruptured, a valve 24 may be released by the lever 28 whenever the handle 31 is in its upper position.
