Abstract

917,778. Hinges and pivots. REPUBLIC INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 18, 1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 33337/61. Class 65 (2). A door 21 is mounted on a depending top pivot 24, which may be the spindle of a door closer and check 22 (not described), by means which permit its ready detachment or assembly and angular adjustment about the pivot axis. The means are located within the hollow top rail 20 of the door. The door leaves the factory complete with a plate 100 (Figs. 2, 3, 11), which is secured thereto by screws 27 and carries a leaf-spring 130, anchored by rivets 132, and a bolt 114 slidable in bosses 106, 108 and loaded by a spring 116. An arm 28 is clamped to the squared end of the pivot 24. The door is assembled on the pivot by turning the arm 28 to the door open position, guiding the door over the arm until the end 140 of the bolt 114 engages a socket 34 formed in the underside of the arm, and pushing the door towards the pivot to compress the spring 116 until the free end 134 of the leaf-spring 130, which is inclined upwardly, snaps into engagement with a depending shoulder 136 formed at the free end of the arm. The door can be detached by driving a screw, e.g. the screw 46 (see below) into a tapped hole 38 in the arm to push the end of the leaf-spring out of engagement with the shoulder, thereby enabling the top of the door to be pulled outwardly away from the arm. The angular adjustment of the door is effected by means of an eccentric bushing 42 (Figs. 2, 3, 4) freely rotatable in an aperture 44 at the free end of the arm and clamped in its adjusted position by a screw 46 engaging the lower plate 54 of an expander assembly 50, the upper plate 52 of which abuts the underside of the arm. The plates 52 (Fig. 9) and 54 are substantially rectangular and have tapered sides 74, 76 between which are trapped the tapered sides 70, 72 of a soft rubber expander 56 (Fig. 6). Tightening of the screw 46 compresses the expander 56 so that it is firmly engaged with the sides of the top rail 20 of the door. The end 134 of the leaf spring and the shoulder 136 are of arcuate shape (Fig. 3) to facilitate the angular adjustment.
