Abstract

Molten metal, e.g. steel, is degassed in a closed vessel, such as a ladle furnished with a gas-tight cover connected via a flexible tube to a vacuum pump, by applying a vacuum to the melt surface and imparting to the vessel a motion which sets up waves on the melt surface of such intensity that their crests become unstable and break up. The vessel is preferably subjected to an eccentric rotary motion, such as described in Specification 801,156, wherein the vessel is moved without rotation about its own axis along a circular path, e.g. 50-100 mm. diameter, with respect to a vertical axis, e.g. at a frequency of 50-100 cycles/minute.
