Abstract

915,300. Drying tea &c. HEAT EXCHANGERS Ltd. March 27, 1961 [March 31, 1960], No. 11455/60. Class 34 (2). Apparatus for withering tea-leaf or drying like material comprises an open trough 1 having a perforated base 2 covered by a sheet 6 of air-permeable material 6, flexible at least in a direction perpendicular to the length of the trough, secured along one edge of the trough and releasably secured along the other, and means for supplying air to pass from the underside of the trough upward through the covering sheet 6 and the material in the trough. The trough is seen in cross-section in Fig. 4. It is long and narrow and has walls with a vertical part 4 and a sloping part 3. The vertical part of the walls may or may not be perforated. The trough bottom 2 is of 2-inch wire mesh supported on bars 5 overlaid with hessian 6. Air from inlets 10 is mixed with a small quantity of hot air from a heat exchanger 11 and propelled by a fan or fans 9 through a duct 8 into a chamber 7 below the trough whence it passes upward to one or more troughs. A flow straightener and hand-operated damper are provided in the duct 8.
