Abstract
915,245. Filling projectiles. WASAGCHEMIE A.G. Oct. 25, 1961, No. 38257/61. Class 9 (2). In the filling of projectiles and cartridges, castings of explosive or propellent material are obtained by heating the upper part of the cast melt or molten mixture during the period of solidification by thermal radiation from a heating cover or duct heated by steam or a circulatory liquid. Infra-red ray heating may also be used. The melt may be nucleated or cast in a semisolidified form. In one embodiment, 25 shell cases of 8.8 cms. calibre are placed in a water box in such a way that one-sixth to one-fifth of their length projects from the top of the box (see Fig. 2). Cylindrical feed heads of 1 cm. gauge are then screwed into the cases, and steam or oil at 110‹ C. is circulated for about 40 minutes while the molten T.N.T. in the shell case is slowly solidified by means of cooling water. In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), shell cases in a water box are pushed on a roller bed underneath a quintuple heating duct 5 metres long, the duct being maintained at 120‹ C. and the period of residence in the duct being about 40 minutes.
