Class 72 A method of quenching metal parts comprises enclosing the parts, after they have been exposed to the quenching medium, together with a portion of the quenching medium, within a shield and maintaining the parts and quenching medium within the shield until quenching is complete. As shown, the hot parts 10 on a support 16 and covered by a shield 18 are lowered into a quenching medium 14. The evolution of gas raises the shield on a rod 17 and the parts are subjected to the effect of the quenching medium; when gas evolution ceases the shield falls and again encloses the parts together with a quantity of the medium, the gas being allowed to escape from the shield round the rod 17. The parts are maintained under the shield until quenching is complete. The shield may be moved by a winch which may be under the control of a thermosensitive device in the tank.
