Abstract
915,128. Refining metals. FISHER A.G., GEORG. June 29, 1959 [June 27, 1958], No. 22269/59. Classes 72 and 82 (1). A process for refining molten metals comprises pouring the metal into a hermetically sealable chamber containing a protective gas and adding a metallic substance to the metal stream, the gas pressure in the chamber being sufficiently above atmospheric pressure to prevent the entry of air. As shown, molten metal 10 is poured into a chamber 3 having an atmosphere of a protective gas, e.g. argon, from a source 6. A metal strip 8, e.g. of magnesium, is fed into the stream of metal from a dispenser 26 and the treated metal falls through a chamber 11 into a ladle 21, the end of the chamber 11 being below the surface of the metal in the ladle 21. Any excess pressure in the vessel may be relieved through a valve 16. The added metal may alloy with the molten metal or may react exothermically therewith and may be in the form of a tube containing more than one metal. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the metal may fall into a covered ladle containing protective gas and having a pressure-relief valve.
