Abstract

A plain bearing material comprising a steel backing to which is bonded a layer of porous bronze constituting a matrix in which the porous bronze, at least at and adjacent to its exposed surface, is impregnated with a mixture of P.T.F.E. and lead and/or an oxide of lead in such a manner that the bronze, after impregnation, contains not less than 28% by volume of the mixture of P.T.F.E. and lead and/or oxide of lead and the percentage of lead and/or oxide of lead in the mixture is between 16 and 44% by volume. Preferably the percentage of lead and/or oxide of lead in the mixture is between 16 and 30% by volume and to effect this the porosity of the sintered bronze should be not less than 36%. The preferred oxide of lead is yellow lead monoxide, the preferred thickness of bronze is between 0,008 and 0,014 inches, the preferred composition of bronze contains between 9 and 11% of tin, and a surface layer of the mixture of P.T.F.E. and lead or oxide of lead is preferably between 0,0004 and 0,0025 inches. A method of obtaining the mixture of P.T.F.E. and lead and/or oxide of lead for impregnation into the porous bronze is described in the Specification. Also described is the effecting of impregnation by passing the steel-backed porous bronze strip with the layer of P.T.F.E. and lead and/or oxide of lead applied to said strip through rolls. After such impregnation the P.T.F.E. should be sintered at a temperature between 327 DEG and 400 DEG C.ALSO:A plain bearing material comprising a steel backing to which is bonded a layer of porous bronze constituting a matrix in which the porous bronze, at least at and adjacent to its exposed surface, is impregnated with a mixture of P.T.F.E. and lead and/or an oxide of lead in such a manner that the bronze, after impregnation, contains not less than 28% by volume of the mixture of P.T.F.E. and lead and/or oxide of lead and the percentage of lead and/or oxide of lead in the mixture is between 16 and 44% by volume.
