Abstract

A process for the extraction of low molecular weight constituents from granulated poly-S -caprolactam, comprises sliding the granulate downwards through a vertical tube, having a length to diameter ratio of between 5:1 and 100:1, counter-currently to an extracting agent for the low molecular constituents. With reference to the drawing, granulate 21 is introduced into the extraction chamber through <PICT:0912302/IV(a)/1> feed 2, extracting agent being pumped through the pipe 4 into the extraction chamber, the inner wall of the passage 5 being perforated so that the extracting agent is distributed evenly into the chamber, the extracting agent being drawn off through the pipe 6 and the granulate removed through 3. In a modification of the process, the quantity of extracting agent which flows through the column per unit of time is reduced from the bottom upwards through removal points of which one is shown in the drawing (7). The examples describe the use of water as the extracting agent.
