911,432. Production of high vacua. HERAEUS G.m.b.H., W. C. March 10, 1961 [March 12, 1960], No. 8841/61. Class 8(1). . In. a process for evacuating a vessel 1 by freezing out the residual gas by means of a freezing pump 25 connected to the vessel by a line 3, a suitable auxiliary gas is introduced through a line 6 into the residual gas in line 3 and the mixture is chemically reacted to yield a more readily freezable product which is congealed in the pump 25. As shown hydrogen exuded from a pot of molten metal 2 is mixed with an excess of oxygen admitted through a solenoid-operated valve 7 in the line 6 and the mixture is converted to water vapour by glow discharge from plates 17 which vapour and residual oxygen is congealed by evaporating helium traversing a refrigeration circuit 26 . . 29.
