Abstract
910,843. Servicing reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Feb. 18, 1960 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 5771/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXX] An unloading device intended for extracting a damaged fuel or control rod or a graphite sleeve surrounding a fuel rod, from a channel in the reactor core comprises a cylindrical body 1 having a ring 2 for attachment to a cable and three equi-spaced fingers 3 of rectangular cross-section. The inner faces 4 of the fingers are arranged to slide over the fuel rod 5 to be extracted and each face has at least one recess 7 in which a ball or roller 9 is held captive. When the device is lowered on to a rod the balls retire into the recesses but on lifting the device the balls 9 move into the lower part of the recesses 7 and wedge against the surface of the rod whereby the latter is lifted. The outer faces of the fingers 3 may be similarly provided with recesses 7<SP>1</SP> containing balls 9<SP>1</SP> and these faces may slide over the inner surface of a graphite sleeve 6 so that the sleeve is extracted simultaneously with the rod.
