Abstract
1,194,937. Grabs for nuclear fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 24 April, 1968 [25 April, 1967], No. 19406/68. Heading B8H. [Also in Division G6] A nuclear element handling apparatus includes a carriage movable on a rotatable beam within the biological shielding of a boiling heavy-water reactor (Fig. 1, not shown) and comprises a guide tube 10 attached to the carriage, the tube receiving a grab body 17 suspended by a cable 16. Studs 36 on the body 17 engage vertical grooves 42 in the tube 10 and prevent rotation of the body, the latter being connected through an extension 19 and universal joints 28, 30 to a support 22 for the grab fingers 20. The fingers 20 are opened and closed by rollers 26 engaging a cam track 25 in a rotatable bush 24, this bush being connected through universal joints 31, 29 to a drum 18 rotatable on the extension 19. Studs 34 on the drum co-operate with a control surface 32 in the tube 10 (this surface being drawn in developed form in Fig. 3, not shown), whereby as the grab body 17 is raised and lowered in the tube the drum is rotated to operate the fingers 20.
