Abstract
In the production of acetylene by the pyrolysis of a hydrocarbon at at least 1,000 DEG C. by contact with a hot combustion gas, the combustion gas is obtained in two stages in the first of which a fuel stream is burned with a stream containing oxygen in an amount not more than 90% of that required for complete combustion, one stream being introduced into a cylindrical combustion chamber in the form of a hollow cone through a central opening in the end wall of the combustion chamber and the other stream through the same opening with a rotary motion so as to form a double toroidal vortex flame and further oxygen is added at one or more points in a second stage, the total amount of oxygen added being 80-100% of that required for complete combustion. The preferred amount of oxygen added in the first stage is 35-50% of that required for complete combustion. Steam may be added with any or all streams to a total of 3-8 kg./kg. of fuel and any or all streams may be preheated to 100-850 DEG C. The temperature of the combustion gases is preferably at least 1,300 DEG C., e.g. 1,400-2,000 DEG C. The hydrocarbon to be pyrolysed preferably has a high proportion of straight chain hydrocarbons, boils below 400 DEG C., and is preferably gaseous or vaporous and preheated to 300-600 DEG C. The amount of hydrocarbon added is 1-5 kg./kg. of fuel. The pressure should be below 5 kg./cm.2 absolute and the residence time of the hydrocarbon is adjusted to below 5 X 10-3 second by adjusting the quench point and/or by adjusting the pressure. The effluent is quenched to below 600 DEG C. with water. Specifications 703,721 and 908,274 are referred to.
