In a gas-purifying apparatus wherein a flow of dust-containing gas is passed substantially normally to the surface of a pool of liquid 5 and entrains droplets therefrom which are carried with it while flowing likewise away from it, when the droplets take up dust from the gas, then deflected so that they are substantially wholly separated and return to the pool 5, the gas flowing to an outlet 4, the pool 5 of substantially constant level is in a chamber 1 also housing an upwardly and downwardly open elongate jacket 8 substantially in the form of a body of revolution of non-uniform circular cross-section about the axis, partly immersed in the pool 5, extending substantially normally to the surface thereof and spaced from the chamber wall, a gas inlet tube 12 extending into the jacket 8 substantially coaxial with it to terminate above the liquid therein, a deflection plate 14 spaced above the upper end of the jacket 8 and extending radially beyond it sealingly engaging the inlet tube 12, and a gas outlet 4 on the chamber 1 above the plate 14, the jacket 8 and inlet tube 12 being of such a length that they define an unobstructed annular space of a height at least equal to the maximum diameter of the jacket 8, the latter and/or the inlet tube 12 being so formed that the said space comprises an upwardly-converging followed by an upwardly-diverging portion. The level of the pool 5 is determined by an overflow outlet 6, the jacket 8 being attached by arms 7 to the chamber 1, which has a conical bottom 2 with a liquid outlet 3.
