Abstract
909,338. Supporting cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Nov. 18, 1960 [Nov. 19, 1959; July 1, 1960], Nos. 39314/59 and 23099/60. Class 36. [Also in Group XXV] In a cantilever supporting arrangement for overhead lines, especially for railways, the lower end of the inclined strut 23 is connected to the vertical supporting surface by a ball-andsocket joint 1, 21. The ball 1 is slightly less than hemispherical and is mounted upon a bracket 13 clamped to a flange 6 of a supporting mast. The socket 21 is hemispherical and formed integrally with a cap 22 on the lower end of the insulator portion 23 of the strut. The radius of the socket is longer than that of the ball, the axis of the strut cutting a vertical line through the centre of the ball at a point below that centre. The top end of the strut may thus always swing in a horizontal arc even though the vertical angle of the strut is adjustable. The strut is assembled on the ball by dropping diametrically opposite inwardly projecting lugs on the socket through co-operating slots in the ball, until the lugs are below the ball, and then swinging the top of the strut in a horizontal arc to its operative position. The strut may be removed by reversing this procedure or alternatively by lowering the strut below the horizontal and withdrawing the socket from the ball, the lugs being clear of the corresponding slots.
