Abstract
Polyethylene is prepared by polymerizing ethylene in a hydrocarbon solvent using as catalyst an aluminium ethyl dichloride-alkali metal halide complex and titanium tetrachloride. The complex may be preformed in the hydrocarbon solvent, titanium chloride added and then ethylene introduced. Sodium chloride, potassium bromide and potassium iodide are specified halides while methyl-cyclohexane is the specified solvent. The product may be extracted with butanol.
