Abstract
Alkyl aluminium sesquichlorides are prepared by reacting aluminium with a primary alkyl chloride in the presence of an inert solvent, the reaction being initiated by a primary alkyl bromide or iodide, suitably in amount from 1 to 30 molar per cent of the total halide used. It is desirable that the alkyl groups of the alkyl chloride and of the initiator should be the same. The reaction may take place between 0 DEG and 250 DEG C., preferably between 50 DEG and 180 DEG C. Suitable solvents are paraffinic and saturated alicyclic hydrocarbons. The sesquichloride so produced may be dehalogenated by the process of Specification 762,200 to give an aluminium trialkyl without separating the sesquichloride from the solvent. The example describes the production of ethyl aluminium sesquichloride from aluminium and ethyl chloride using decalin as a solvent and ethyl bromide as reaction initiator.
