Abstract

908,487. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH ELECTRICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 17, 1960 [Aug. 19, 1959], No. 28388/59. Class 39 (1). In a getter pump an envelope having an inlet houses two co-operating electrodes 3, 8, Fig. 1, one, 3, of which is of gettering material and a third electrode 15. The initial discharge between cathode 3 and initiator electrode 8 is a pulse produced by opening a gap between electrodes 3, 8 by an electric motor-driven mechanism operating through bellows 20 and closing it again at the end of the pulse or by pulses from a car ignition coil, Fig. 2 (not shown), with a gap of adjustable length. The discharge between Ni gauze anode 15 and cathode 3 is also pulsed being obtained by the discharge of a capacitor 23 through a focusing coil 17 and the anode 15 in series. The cathode is made of gettering material such as Ti, Zr, Mg or Ca and has a hemispherical upper end 4, the arc initially from the end face of 4 being transferred to the side faces of 3. Some getter material is given off from the cathode and forms a layer on anode 15 and on the tube wall to serve as the active ion trapping layer. Mild steel discs shield the top and bottom of the envelope from gettering material. In either embodiment the cathode 3 may be movable instead of initiator electrode 8. The capacitor 23 may be replaced by a battery and switch. The magnetic means may be permanent or electromagnet.
