In a quilting attachment for a sewing- machine having a work-holding frame movable along a given outline by the co-operation of a drive and guide member with a stationary rail conforming to that outline, the rail is interrupted at the tip of a point of that outline and a thrustblock is there disposed having an auxiliary arcshaped rail which co-operates with an auxiliary drive member on the frame. The rail may comprise a belt, cable, or, as shown, a rack 10. The upper frame of the quilting attachment carries cross-pieces 12 on which is fixed a sleeve 13 in which a tube 14 may pivot and slide against the action of a spring 17. A pinion 11 freely mounted on a shaft 27 journalled in drive-plates 16 secured to the lower end of the tube engages the rack 10 and is rotated by chains and gearing from a motor-driven shaft 15 journalled in the tube. Auxiliary drive means comprising pinions 30a, 30b fast on the shaft 27 are driven by the chain and gearing by the motor but at a higher speed than that of the pinion 11. As the pinion 11 reaches the tip of a point of the outline where the racks 10 are discontinued (see Fig. 7), the conical portion 16c (see Fig. 5) at the lower parts 16a of the drive-plates 16 engages a centring stud 33 provided on a thrust-block 32 disposed at the tip. One of the pinions, in this case the pinion 30a, meshes with a curved rack 34 provided on the block, to rotate the driving assembly about a vertical axis until the plates 16 meet a stop 35 so positioned that the drive-plates are in a position to move off along the axis of the second branch of the point. Where the given outline includes a crossing the tooth arranged to be positioned at the crossover point is replaced by a peg. This peg is not required when, in another modification, the pinion 11 is replaced by a chain whose lower part is guided so as to present a horizontal portion to the rack.
