Class 112 In a linking machine comprising a pointcarrying ring 4 rotatable around a fixed dial plate, a sewing needle entering the grooves in the points inwardly from outside the ring, the dial plate carries a column 14 arranged co-axially therewith, the mechanism for driving the point ring and a thread looper is disposed beneath the dial plate, and the drive for the needle is disposed within the column so as to leave the upper surface of the disc plate unobstructed. A needle bar 15, carrying the needle 11, is mounted at the end of an arm 14a extending radially from the upper end of the column. A cam follower carried by the needle bar co-operates with a fixed cam 28 for effecting lateral movement of the needle bar. The point carries a gauge ring 17 on which is adjustably mounted a pair of pointers 18, 18a. The point ring and dial plate are carried by a hollow pillar 2 rotatably mounted on a fixed base 1 and provided at its lower end with a rubbercovered flange 3 to enable the pillar to be turned by the operator's foot. Mounted within the pillar is an electric motor 20a coupled by means of an infinitely variable gear 20, controlled by a handwheel 8 mounted on the pillar, to a driving shaft 21 in which is interposed a universal joint 21a and a torsion spring 21b. The connections from a switch 27, operated by a treadle 27a, to the motor may be the sliding type to permit rotation of the pillar 360 degrees.
