Abstract

908,025. Expansion joints. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 15, 1959 [June 18, 1958], No. 19492/58. Class 99(1). An external, annular bellows member 12 bridges an axial gap between axially aligned ducts 10, 11 and an internal flexible, annular shield 13 secured to the duct 10 projects axially into the duct 11. There is an annular clearance between the shield and the duct 11 to allow limited flexing of the joint, and the flexibility of the shield is such that, in the event of a substantial leak developing through the bellows member, a differential pressure will be set up across the shield which will expand the free end of the shield into contact with the duct 11 whereby to at least reduce the amount of fluid escaping from the joint. The shield may be provided with circumferentially spaced, axially extending slits and there may be a flexible tie-plate 15 welded to the ducts and to allow limited angular movement of the ducts relative to each other in a plane normal to that of the plate.
