Abstract

907,871. Centrifugal separators. DONALDSON CO. Inc. May 25, 1961, No. 8894/61. Class 23. An air cleaner for an internal combustion engine comprises an annular filter 1 removably housed in a cylindrical container 11 and forming therewith an annular air passage 13 communicating at one end with the air inlet 23 and having at its other end a partition wall 30 formed with a cylindrical baffle 35 surrounding the adjacent end of the filter and a restricted dust passage 32 leading to a dust receptacle 16 formed by a detachable end cover 15 of the container 11. Air entering the passage 13 from the inlet 23 is given a whirling motion by vanes 34 on a a baffle 33 so that heavy dust particles are separated out by centrifugal force and discharged through the passage 32, the air and ligher particles passing to the filter which retains the particles and discharges the clean air at 22. The filter 1 comprises a filtering element 2, preferably pleated filter paper, and inner and outer screens 9, 10 and is retained by a bolt 25. The dust cover 15 is releasably secured to the container by a split clamping band 18.
