Abstract

The invention comprises water-soluble monoazo dyes of formula <FORM:0907815/IV (b)/1> wherein D is the residue of a diazo component and X is a pyrimidine or triazine residue containing a halogen atom which is bound to a carbon atom next to a nitrogen atom of the heterocyclic nucleus and metal complexes thereof. They are prepared by condensing an appropriate metallised or metal-free aminoazo dye with an at least dihalogenated triazine or pyrimidine. When a trihalo-s-triazine is used it may be reacted, before or after reaction with the aminoazo dye, with ammonia, an alcohol, phenol or mercaptan or a primary amine under conditions so that the final product contains a halogen atom. The non-metallised dyes may also be obtained by coupling a diazo compound with a 1-naphthol-3-sulphonic acid having in the 5-position a halotriazinyl- or halopyrimidinyl-amino group. Copper, nickel, cobalt and chromium metal complexes are specified. The dyes may be used to dye silk, leather, wool, superpolyamide, superpolyurethane and especially cellulose fibres, in red shades. The dyeings on cellulose may be fixed by treatment with alkali. In Examples: (1) the dye 2-aminophenol-4-sulphonic acid --> 1-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid is prepared, coppered, and the copper complex condensed first with cyanuric chloride and then with aniline-3-sulphonic acid; (2) the condensation product of equimolar amounts of 1-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid;and 6-(41-sulphophenyl)- amino- 2:4-dichlorotriazine is coupled with diazotised 1-aminobenzene-3-sulphonic acid.
