Abstract

907,623. Electron lenses. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 28, 1960 [Sept. 30, 1959], No. 33196/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A magnetic electron lens system for focusing a beam of electrons into a flat strip, e.g. for interaction with a planar microwave structure, includes two transverse-field magnetic lenses, the first lens tending to converge the beam in the y-plane and to diverge it in the x-plane and the second lens tending to diverge the beam in the y-plane and to converge it in the x-plane, the relative strengths and spacing of the two lenses being so adjusted that the beam finally emerges parallel to the longitudinal axis. Each lens may be in the form of a U-shaped electro- or permanent magnet with slanted pole-faces to produce a curved field. The fields of the two lenses are in opposite directions, thus deflecting the beam in opposite directions.
