An ornamental plate of metal, xylolith, asbestos, wood, synthetic plastic or other material has secured by adhesive thereto an interlayer of wallpaper, printed film or plastic film provided with a coloured pattern, the interlayer being applied in tensioned state, and the interlayer is covered by spraying or pouring with a layer of colourless polyester varnish, and the varnish layer is dried at elevated temperature to form a glassy hard coating which is subsequently ground, polished or dulled. The finished plate may be bordered by a metal or plastic strip.
