In a cyclic process for producing a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen by cracking paraffinic hydrocarbons in admixture with steam and in the presence of a nickel catalyst, during a heating period the catalyst is oxidized and thereby heated by passage therethrough of air mixed with a waste gas, e.g. recycled waste gas produced during a heating period, and during a gas making period a mixture of the hydrocarbon and steam is passed through the bed of catalyst in a direction opposite to the direction of flow of the air/waste gas mixture. In practice the nickel catalyst is initially oxidized with air only and the air/waste gas mixture is formed and used after this initial period. Towards the end of a heating period the air may be shut off and waste gas only passed through the heated catalyst further to extend the heated zone in the catalyst.
