Abstract
906,282. Plate and tubular heat exchange elements. BIRWELCO Ltd. Oct. 27, 1960, No. 36844/60. Class 64 (3). A plate or tubular heat exchange element 2 has spaced projections extending from it such that each projection is in opposition with a surface of the same or another projection, and have closely adjacent serrations formed in the initially plain surface of the projections; the depths of the serrations being not more than 50% of the minimum distance between two adjacent projections or between one projection and an opposed part thereof. In the form shown, one radial face 4 of a helical fin 3 provided on a tube 1 is serrated, the serrations comprising of 60-degree V-section grooves which are concentric with the axis of the tube. In another embodiment both radial faces of the fin are grooved, and in a further embodiment the outermost portion of one of the radial faces is left plain. To achieve complete regularity of the serrations, the grooves may be formed after the helix has been welded on the tube. If the serrations are formed before being wound on the tube then those which will be subject to maximum distortion on bending may be of smaller dimensions than those which will be subject to least distortion. In a further form described the serrations may comprise threads formed on studs projecting radially from the surface of a tube.
