Abstract

Polyvinyl alcohol yarns, free from spinning solvent, are drawn at 180 DEG -230 DEG C. in the vapour of a boiling organic liquid boiling within this temperature range at atmospheric pressure, and which, in this temperature range, is a non-solvent for, and chemically inert to, the polyvinyl alcohol. The term "yarns" is so defined as to include tows. The term "polyvinyl alcohol" includes long-chain synthetic polymers composed of at least 50% by weight of vinyl alcohol units. The vapour may be saturated or superheated, and may be that of a hydrocarbon, e.g. decahydronaphthalene, or an alcohol, e.g. benzyl alcohol. In Examples (1), a 145 denier, 20 filament, 1,3 turns per inch polyvinyl alcohol yarn is drawn 6x in decahydronaphthalene vapour at 198 DEG C., at a yarn speed of 490 feet/minute with a residence time in the vapour of 0,28 seconds, (2), an identical yarn is drawn 6,5x in benzyl alcohol vapour at 205 DEG C., at a yarn speed of 525 feet/minute. The process of the invention reduces the time otherwise necessary to bring yarns into thermal equilibrium, and thus enables drawing to be effected in apparatus of reduced dimensions.
