Abstract

Extruded products such as filaments, threads, fibres, straws, slivers, sheets, strips and ribbons of vinyl polymers are produced by a dryspinning process characterised in that the products carry with them by reason of their movement their evaporative atmosphere in a closed circuit where the atmosphere, after emergence of the said products is subjected to cooling to condense the evaporated solvent or solvents. The cell should be as free from constrictions as possible in order to maintain the gas-flow. Any solvent for the vinyl polymer may be used such as carbon disulphide, tetrahydrofuran, glycol formal or acetone. The evaporative atmosphere may be air, but any other gas may be used, particularly inert gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide in order to lessen the possibility of fire or explosion. The spinning solution may contain dyes, pigments, plasticizers, &c., and may be subjected to any textile finishing process. In a typical example a solution of 30 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride in 35 parts by weight of carbon disulphide and 35 parts by weight of acetone is heated to 75 DEG C. and extruded through a 24-hole spinneret into the apparatus described in Specification 605,612.
