Abstract
905,048. Refrigerating. GARRETT CORPORATION. June 10, 1960 [June 22, 1959], No. 20595/60. Class 29. An air cooling device includes a vortex tube 1 (Fig. 1) having an inlet 2, a hot tube 3, a cold outlet 4 for cooled air, means for bringing water into heat-exchange relationship with the outside of the hot tube 3 to cool it and means 5 for bleeding air from the hot end of the hot tube and bringing it into contact with the water to effect cooling by evaporation. In operation bleed air passes through openings 5 into a chamber 12 beneath a porous partition 7 which causes the air to pass up through a water column 8 in the form of very small bubbles which cool the water by evaporation. Air and vaporized water escape through spray baffles 11. In a modification, shown in Fig. 2, a small portion of the bleed air passes through openings 27 and lifts water in an annulus chamber 22 to feed cooling water downwardly over a series of baffles 29, 31 through which the major portion of the bleed air passes upwardly. In a further modification the main portion of the air is caused to flow through a passage which bypasses the pool.
