Abstract

The invention comprises a mixture of azo dyes of formulae <FORM:0905040/IV (b)/1> and <FORM:0905040/IV (b)/2> where X is SO2Alk or Hlg, X1 is Alk or OAlk, Y is NO2 or Hlg, Z is H or Hlg and R is an aryl or heterocyclic residue free from groups imparting solubility in water and the mol ratio of the dyes in the mixture is within the range of 2:1 and 1:2, preferably 3:2 to 2:3. The mixture is made by coupling a mixture of diazonium compounds of appropriate aminoazo dyes with the desired arylamide of 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid. The mixture may be formed in substance, on the fibre or on another substratum. Formation on the fibre is accomplished in the presence of conventional additives. Vegetable fibres are coloured in grey or black shades. Examples are provided of the preparation of the mixtures and their use in colouring cotton, rayon and regenerated cellulose. Representative of the values of R in the examples are the phenyl group which may contain chloro, methoxy, ethoxy, methyl and nitro substituents, naphthyl and a 3-methoxydiphenylene oxide residue.
