Abstract

905,002. Cooling cylinders. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Nov. 9, 1960 [Aug. 21, 1959], No. 28708/59. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXVI] An engine air-cooling system comprises two impellors, one impellor 11 driven continuously by the engine and the other (not shown) being intermittently driven. Impellor 11 is fixed to an engine-driven pulley 16 which drives a shaft 10 having secured thereto a housing 45 arranged to surround an armature 44 which drives the second impellor through a shaft 21 and a hub 23. Magnetic particles in the chamber 37 are energized by an electro-magnetic coil in a surrounding chamber 32, under manual control or engine temperature-responsive control, to solidify the particles and thereby transmit the drive between the housing 45 and the housing 44. Alternatively, the second impellor may be driven by an electric motor which is switch-controlled in response to engine temperature changes.
