Abstract
831,708. Axial-flow fans; stuffing-box substitutes. SOC. D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS INDUSTRIELLES, COMMERCIALES ET IMMOBILIERES INTER-TECHNIQUE. June 25, 1958 [June 26, 1957], No. 20336/58. Classes 110 (1) and 122 (5). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXVII] An I.C. engine radiator fan B, Fig. 1, freely journalled on the driving shaft 6 of a cooling water pump 3 is connectible thereto by an electromagnetic clutch F controlled by a thermostat G in the engine head so as to engage when a predetermined engine water temperature is reached and to remain engaged so long as a predetermined lower engine water temperature is exceeded. The clutch F comprises a driving coil member 37, mounted on an engine driven pulley D fast with the shaft 6, and a driven armature member 53 connected to the fan B via three tangential spring steel strips biasing the armature into the adjustable disengaged position shown where fibre or plastic sheets 59 thereon contact three screws 58. Current from the engine ignition circuit passes to one coil end 38 via the thermostat G, a brush 43 and a slip ring 39 secured by insulating cement to a plastic ring 41, the other coil end 46 being earthed via the shaft 6 and elements 18, 15, 17, 10, 11, Fig. 4, of a water pump packing gland, some of which may be by-passed by a conductor 60, and a carbon ring 11 of which contacts the pump body as through a layer of conductive oil containing metal salts. The packing gland is rotated by interengaging lugs 18a, 18b and comprises a brass ring 10 locating both the carbon ring 11 and a rubber ring 14 acted on by a stainless steel spring 15. Oil escape apertures 47 or 48 are provided and there may be one or more balance weights 50.
