Abstract
904,626. Hose reels. AERO & ENGINEERING (MERSEYSIDE) Ltd., and HOOPER, E. Oct. 30, 1959 [Nov. 8, 1958; Dec. 22, 1958; July 1, 1959], Nos. 35912/58, 41217/58 and 22533/59. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XXIX] A hose reel incorporating a valve means which is automatically actuated on running out the hose is provided with a valve seating which is permitted a limited amount of movement or float so that it follows or takes part in movement of the valve in the opening direction, to maintain the valve closed, until it comes up against an abutment or stop, and has a slipping clutch on the drive between the reel and the valve means which allows the reel to overrun the valve means once the valve has opened or closed fully. As shown in Fig. 9, a nut 60 is screwed on to the multi-start threaded end 55 of a valve operating shaft 52 and is connected to an enlarged valve head 51, having rotation preventive means comprising a pin 59a projecting into a slot 59. The nut 60 is driven by a plurality of spring loaded balls 62 in a housing 64, which is connected to the rotating parts of the reel 43, 42 and is prevented from movement axially by a ring 61 connected to a stationary gland 58 screwed into the valve housing 47. The valve means comprises a valve 48 which has a sealing washer 49 let into a recess in the valve face, the washer abutting against a movable valve seating 54. When the hose is unwound from the reel hub 42 the reel drives the nut 60 through the friction clutch which thereby moves shaft 52 to the right, the valve following owing to the fluid pressure thereon. The valve seating 54 is pressed against the washer 49 by the fluid pressure in inlet 44 and follows the movement of the valve until a flange 54a abuts against a stop 66a formed on a housing 66. Further rotation of the reel causes the valve to open. When the valve is in the fully open position continued rotation of the reel is permitted by " slipping " of the ball drive device. If for any reason water pressure ceases a spring 53 will force the valve against the seating and prevent any return of water. To overcome water hammer, provision is made to ensure that the pressure in the direction of flow of the water on the valve seating is greater than in the opposite direction. With this object in view an 0-ring 67a is made larger than an 0-ring 67b or a spring is provided instead of O ring 67a, which forces the valve seating to the right. As shown in Fig. 2, the hose reel system and a guide means, to ensure free and easy running of the hose 17, may be mounted in a cabinet 11 recessed in the wall; alternatively both the reel and guide means may be mounted by means of brackets direct to a wall. The reel is rotatably mounted on a bracket 15, the bracket having a hollow hub 16 through which water passes to the hose as above described. The guide means see also Fig. 7, comprises a bracket 23, free to swing about the axis 24, on which is rotatably mounted a grooved roller 25 under which thehose runs, and four rollers 26, 27, 28, 29, two rotating about a horizontal axis and two a vertical axis, through which the hose runs. On pulling out the hose the bracket 23 rotates and a cam face 41 acts on the operating member 39 of a microswitch 38 which can start an auxiliary pump and/or operate an alarm. The first Provisional Specification describes a valve arrangement with a fixed seating thus providing no delay in the start of the flow of water on unwinding the hose. A friction clutch of the friction plate type, connecting the reel and valve, is also described. A different valve arrangement is shown in Fig. 3 whereby the water inlet is through the threaded portion 19 which is moved to the left by a nut 18 on rotation of the reel, as -above described, until ports 30a connect with ports 31 and the valve is fully opened. A friction clutch operates through metal to metal surfaces 28 thus providing for " overrunning " of the reel and nut 18.
