Abstract

994,039. Valves. ROTALIFT MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. June 17, 1963 [Dec. 1, 1962], No. 45571/62. Heading F2V. [Also in Division B8] A valve, for controlling the flow of fluid to a hose on a reel, is positioned outside the reel, and has a part adapted to be engaged by the reel, or by a part movable therewith, so that the valve is operated by rotation of the reel, with the drive between the reel and valve incorporating a device which permits the reel to over-run the drive when it has effected opening or closing of the valve. The drive comprises teeth, bosses or gearing 43 on the reel acting on teeth, bosses or gearing 44 on a sleeve 19 to which is keyed one disc 30 of a slipping clutch device. The other disc 35 is keyed to a square section upper part of a mushroom or jumper valve 26 which has a screw-threaded part 22. The two discs 30, 35 have chamfered bosses on their engaging surfaces so that once the valve is fully opened or shut, disc 35 is forced up against spring 40, allowing disc 30 to slip beneath. The valve is mounted on a bracket 48 which is fixed to a wall and has a switch actuated by bosses &c. 44 to operate an alarm and/or start a water pump for the hose. Sealing wires or seals 51, 52 prevent or indicate unauthorized tampering with the reel. As modifications, the above clutch may be replaced by a slipping ball clutch or friction clutch. A friction disc may also be provided at the right-hand end (Fig. 1) of shaft 13 to take the end thrust due to the water pressure and to steady the rotation of the reel. Washers may be inserted between valve head 26a and spindle 24 to adjust the size of the valve opening.
