Abstract
904,258. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. LAURENCE, SCOTT & ELECTROMOTORS Ltd., and CRAIG, M. D. Aug. 3, 1960 [Aug. 5, 1959], No. 26811/59. Class 35. An electrically-driven drum for driving a conveyer or a pulley is cooled by passing fluid through the inside of the stator. Outer drum 1 is driven through gearing 34 from an inner drum 10 carrying a rotor 24. Stator 20 is mounted on a sleeve 56 fitting tightly on shaft 8, and the stator winding 22 is energized through leads which pass through a bore at one end of shaft 8. The other end of the shaft is also hollow and the bore 51 communicates with a first helical channel 54 between the shaft and the sleeve 56. A second helical channel 61 runs parallel to the first and communicates with it at the end further from bore 51. Channel 61 communicates with a tube 70 passing through the centre of bore 51 and sealed from it by seal 71. Fluid, such as water, passes from inlet 73 through the channels to outlet 74. Alternatively, a single channel may be used and the bore 51 extended to the other end of stator 20. The channel or channels may zig-zag round the shaft instead of running helically. The channels may be constructed as described in Specification 883,827.
