Abstract
A bituminous composition comprising expanded polystyrene granules and bitulate is formed by mixing expandable polystyrene granules with liquid bitulate which is at a temperature high enough to expand the polystyrene. The bitulate may be bitumen, tar or pitch.ALSO:A bituminous composition comprising expanded polystyrene granules and bitulate is formed by mixing expandable polystyrene granules with liquid bitulate which is at a temperature high enough to expand the polystyrene. In a preferred method the granules are added to the liquid bitulate maintained at 190 DEG F. to 400 DEG F. The bitulate may be bitumen, tar or pitch and the composition comprises 1 part by weight of polystyrene to 5 parts by weight of liquid bitulate. The mixture after pouring into a mould is compacted by rolling, ramming or floating. The granules may be heated to 175 DEG F. prior to mixing with the bitulate and in a modified method the liquid bitulate may be poured over the granules.
