Abstract

902,834. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Nov. 14, 1930 [Nov. 12, 1959], No. 39081/60. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] A vertically movable die for heat-sealing the edges of paper strips 11, 12 to form a package about a gauze pad 10 is secured to a carriage 45 reciprocated by mechanism 53. A member 43 of the die carrying electric heating elements 94 is secured to a spider 87 lowered from the position shown in Fig. 12 by a piston 86 as the carriage 45 begins to advance. The piston 86 is cam-operated through parallel motion linkage. Pressure on the lowered die is exerted pneumatically, a chamber 116 above a diaphragm 117 being connected to a source of air pressure under control of a valve 122 operated by cam mechanism. As the diaphragm 117 flexes downwards it transmits pressure to the spider 87, thereby drawing down the member 43. The die is in sealing position, Fig. 14 (not shown), throughout almost all the forward stroke of the machine, the carriage 45 travelling at the same speed as the strips 11, 12. The member 43 is raised before return of the carriage 45. Safety mechanism is provided to exhaust the chamber 116 and raise the member 43 should the machine stop. The strip 11 carries adhesive material on its underside.
