Hot liquid entering an inlet m in a body part b passes to an outlet n in another body part a via a glass tube c in which is disposed an aluminium rodtype thermal element d. The rod d abuts the stem of a poppet valve g in the part a controlling the flow of cold water or other coolant from an inlet b to an outlet j. The outlet j and inlet m may be connected to the inlet and outlet, respectively, of a cooling passage in the mould of a metal die.
