In order to compensate for manufacturing errors in measuring equipment using a uniformly coded scale to measure the relative displacement of two members, the scale is sensed at three or more points simultaneously, the points being so chosen that theoretically (that is with a perfect scale, perfectly mounted &c.) the signals produced at the different sensing points should be identical, and means are provided for combining the signal produced by the different sensing in such a way as to effect some compensation for the manufacturing errors. In the preferred embodiment the signals 8<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, from four sensing heads are summed to give a signal 12, and means are provided (e.g. a trigger with a threshold level shown by 14) to produce an output signal symmetrical about the peak of the sum signal 12. This output signal is then used in preference to any of the signals actually produced by the actual sensing heads.
